Description

Here is a DEMO version of the Light weight of my new font, Schriftbild Grotesk. It contains all upper and lowercase letters, but nothing else.

You may use this for personal use only. No commercial use is allowed. If you want to use it for something commercial, feel free to buy the font when it is released.

In my opinion there are some inconsistencies but in general this is impressive work.

First, I must say my first impression was that /G, /R and /S are off but after looking at this for a while I think they're rather well designed quirks. The top of the S is quite wide and the back leans quite far back but it does look quite attractive. I do still have mixed feelings about /G though. The top terminal of /C and /G seems to slant down a bit which I accept as a nice quirk to this font, however I'm not so sure about the horizontal in /G sticking out. For some reason I would find it somewhat logical in a slab serif typeface but for a sans it seems a bit too decorative.

An issue I do have with this font is the inconsistency in widths. /P has a tiny bowl (I usually give /P a bigger bowl than /R so I can fill more of the white space underneath the bowl) but it works well in this font because the proportions of some letters suggest an oldstyle construction I think this is evident in the wide /M and /N for example but it makes me wonder why the /H is so condensed. I think /B could be a little wider and /A perhaps a bit more condensed. In any case, /U is definitely too condensed and /Z is definitely too wide.

Did you use guidelines for the lowercase letters? Perhaps it's an optical effect but I can't help but feel /c and /g are smaller than a/b/d. The bowl of /g looks particularly small actually. /h looks a bit too condensed and in fact looks more condensed than /n which I find odd because the proportions should be the same I think. /n could also be a little wider. /x should be wider and /z should be a bit more condensed. /s looks too small and I'm wondering if the ascender of /t shouldn't be a bit shorter.

Don't get discouraged by my criticism though. Schriftbild Grotesk is showing a lot of potential and with some fixes you have something really great. Are you also designing other weights?
